  Brief History

The College of Pharmacy started out in 1991 as a School of Pharmacy offering a 2-year Pharmacy Assistant program. The first head of the department was Ms. Nimfa Laganapan, who was appointed as Faculty Assistant. She worked with the then Executive Director of Health Sciences, Dr. Karen B. Tamayo, and Mrs. Analiza Malalay, a pioneer Pharmacy faculty member, to have a four year BS Pharmacy course in the university. Their perseverance and patience paid off when the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted a four-year BS Pharmacy course in 1996.

For this reason, the first Dean in the person of Dr. Felicidad Anzaldo was appointed. To assist Dean Anzaldo, Ms. Haidee Moreno was appointed as Executive Dean and Ms. Leah Malapitan as the OIC. Enrollment increases to about 230 students with the first batch of BS Pharmacy students graduated in 1997. The following years saw the graduates performing satisfactorily in the Pharmacist Licensure Examination achieving an 85% passing rate in January 2000.

With the retirement of Dean Anzaldo last June of 2007, the college is now supervised by the newly appointed Dean, Ms. Aileen M. Patron assisted by the Executive Dean, Mr. Rufo S. Calixtro, Jr. With their supervision, the College will continue its pursuit for excellence in Pharmacy education committed in improving and strengthening student's abilities, skills and competence in the field of Pharmacy.

After a decade of existence, the College is now a PACOP member and preparing for Level I accreditation (PACUCOA) in its continued pursuit in providing quality Pharmaceutical education to its clientele.

At present, the College of Pharmacy of the UPH-Dr. Jose G. Tamayo Medical University offers a complete undergraduate Pharmacy programs strongly committed in producing competent and globally competitive Pharmacists dedicated in giving overall social, mental, emotional and physical health service to individuals, communities and country.

Vision

The College dedicates itself in preparing pharmacy students to meet the competencies required in the areas of drug manufacture and dispensing, clinical and pharmaceutical research and community and professional health care service for both the present and the future.

Mission

The College offers its students an education that will prepare them to become competent pharmacists who are patient-oriented and equipped with moral, ethical and caring values and concern for human health care issues.

The College develops quality graduates who possess sound scientific knowledge base; well-developed clinical, research and pharmaceutical manufacturing expertise; critical thinking and problem solving capabilities; and effective communication skills.

The mission is accomplished by providing an education which is values-oriented and consistent with the Perpetualite mission and vision to provide excellent and quality education.

Objectives

The main concern of pharmacy education is to provide the country with pharmacists who are scientifically competent to deliver the full spectrum of pharmaceutical services in health care delivery.

At the end of the course, the pharmacy students should have acquired the knowledge, skills, competencies and attitude
  • in scientific research methods and processes, and in the development, formulation, utilization and evaluation of drugs for the prevention, diagnosis, mitigation and treatment of diseases of man and animals;
  • in manufacturing, identifying, analyzing, compounding and storage of drugs in their dosage forms;
  • in dispensing drugs as well as in counseling clients in the proper use of medication both prescribed and chosen by the client;
  • to enable them to contribute to the overall social, mental and physical health of the community and the country;
  • to enable them to provide information to allied health professionals on all matters pertaining to drugs and their dosage forms;
  • in applying business principles and legal requirements which are relevant to the practice of Pharmacy; and
  • in advocating for professional and ethical pharmacy practice.
