Brief History of College of Physical Therapy

The College of Physical Therapy of the University of Perpetual Help-Dr. Jose G. Tamayo Medical University (Formerly known as the Perpetual Help College of Medicine) was established in 1980 by the founder Dr. Jose G. Tamayo with Dr. Karen B. Tamayo as the Institute Director.

The first Dean of the Institute was Dr. Felimon Quinon (1980-1982) and the first college secretary was Josie Angkay. The Physical Therapy program received its government recognition in 1985, with Dr. Vicente L. Gan as the Dean of the Institute of Physical Therapy. The Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy is a four year program from 1980 to 1992, and it was only in 1993 where a five year BS Physical Therapy program was implemented. In 1997 the Certificate in Physical Therapy course, a three year program was offered.

The College of Physical Therapy is constantly in pursuit of excellence, and this is best shown by the accreditation status received from PACUCOA which was done in 1997 for level 1 and 1998 for level In 1998, headed by the first chancellor of the medical University, Dr, Arcadio L. Tamayo, with the help of the first Executive Dean of College of PT and OT, Dr. Cynthia Marquez actively steered the college for level II status.

Four years later the college undergone Level II First Re-Accreditation and the recognition was awarded in February 2004 with Dr. Vicente L. Gan as the Dean of the College of Physical Therapy and Mr. John P. Lumagui.

At present, after 28 years of existence, the college have graduated 26 batches most of which are employed here and abroad. (Version June 2008)

Objectives

The College of Physical Therapy aims to develop competent graduates who can apply practical knowledge in the delivery of therapeutic programs in different hospitals and community health settings; who are research and community service oriented; able to relate to other members of the rehabilitation team and able to carry a comprehensive treatment programs for their patients.

Specifically, upon completion of the program, the student should be able to:
  • Apply principles of physical therapy in dealing with his/her clients in different practice settings.
  • Demonstrate proficiency of skills in the evaluation and management of various conditions.
  • Commit to deliver altruistic patient care.
  • Be involved in research committed in improving quality of care.
  • Pursue academic and professional excellence through continuing education.
  • Be competent to practice locally and globally.
Macro Vision

The University of Perpetual Help System shall emerge as a premier university south of Metro Manila and in Southern Tagalog Region. It shall provide a venue for the pursuit of excellence in academic, technology, and research through community partnership.

Specifically, the University shall take role as catalyst for human development. It shall continue to inculcate value as a away of strengthening the moral fiber of the Filipino individual a proud of their race and prepared for exemplary global participation in arts, science, humanities, and business.

It foresees the Filipino people enjoying a quality of life and abundance living in peace and building a nation that the next generation will nourish, cherish and value.

The University of Perpetual Help System is dedicated to the development of the Filipino as a leader. It aims to graduate dynamic students who are physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually committed to the achievement of the highest quality of life.

As a system of services in health and education, the UPHL is dedicated to the formation of Christian service and research-oriented professionals, leaders and citizens with great social concern and with commitment to the delivery of quality education and health care.

It shall produce Perpetualites who outstandingly value the virtues of reaching out and helping others as vital ingredients to nation building.
